3 years old in San Diego, CA. Navy new duty station.

Teenager boys throw rocks at me in San Diego, and lacerated my head.

1961
Moved to Saint Petersburg, FL Navy new duty station.

1962
Caught burning up the neighborhood wild fields. Police involved.
7.
1963
My mother died, and left us all alone! Dad had to retire from Navy.
8.
1964
Turmoil and empty. Attacked by wild Shepherd dog. Had to get Rabbie Shots14 days. Terrible times. Moved to Lakeland, FL late in that year. Dad settles inhis new job at the Federal Building. GS-09.
9.
1965
Now we are in Lakeland. No one was happy. I got in trouble on a regular basesfor many months that year. I became a bully for a while. Next, I protected theweak for years after that.
10.
1966
Got in trouble in school for disobedient regularly. Got a private tutor named :Mrs. Wesley. She took me under her wing for many years. The Principle andher knew my story and it was not hard to discern what was wrong with me. NOMOTHER AROUND TO HELP AND COMFORT!

1967
Became very wild; drove my 3 speed all over Lakeland. It is a miracle I did notget kidnaped or ran over.
12.
1968
Caught an 8 pound bass on a stolen lure. That summer school let out for thesummer, and I woke up at 6:30 and went to lake Crago. Kid next to me had anice tackle box full of lures. When he was not looking I took liberty of one.And when the kid left I cast that big ole lure out there and caught me a trophy.Wow; what a moment, and what a memory. Just do it, and get it done.

1969
Went into Junior High School. Lakeland Junior High. 80% Negroes. And anightmare. What a shock to all of us that had to go there. We had fights everyweek. Very disruptive to our systems.

1971
9th grade. Learned how to use the city bus. I walk from Junior High and crossthe city railroad tracks to the bus station. Did this for months. Got curious andwalked around that area and found Cannon Music Company. Asked for a joband got it. Mr. Ware started me out putting piano chairs together and then therewas other furniture parts to put together . I get on the freight elevator and go tothe basement, and put lots of Piano benches together. If there was nothinggoing on I would go out and clean the front windows. We kept that front clean.Sometimes I go around and sweep the floors with the large floor dust mop.Yeah; I even cleaned the upstairs toilets. That old building had a verywelcoming spirit during the Holidays. People from all central Florida camethere to buy our Pianos. Later that year I got to go delivery some Pianos toJacksonville, And Miami. We were all over that area back then. I got promotedto $2.50 per hour. Not bad for a 15 year old.

1972
Got my first Motorcycle, and was now in the 10th grade. Moving on up. Toldmy dad hey I ain't riding that school bus no more. He knew I had a job, andhelped me with getting the first Yamaha 100 cc twin engine street bike. Laterthat year I went up to have it serviced at the shop and saw a newer version. BoyI had to do some smooth talking, but my dad said OK; he helped me trade thatone in for a 125 cc Induro dirt bike. Now I could go all over the place. Backroads off roads. Wow; my world just opened Wide up. Now I could drivemyself to work; and go visit my friends. Whole new world opened up for me.My dad was not really close, but I exploited his finances cause I needed them. Ialso did some things that made him happy. I stayed out of trouble and I stayedin school. I did not miss a day of school. Later that year I had a Piano fall onmy left great toe in Jacksonville, FL . Also, later that year my motorcycle wasstolen out of our front yard. That's when my dad got me my first car. 1970Chevy Impala. 400 small block.

1973
Now I am in the 11th grade; going strong. Self starter; get myself up and I wasin my own little world. I played by my rules. You want it go get it. It is notgoing to knock on your front door; unless it's the Police; and they did. I got aticket for loud mufflers and forgot to pay the $22 fine. The police came andtook me to jail. Jimmy called dad hey your son just got taken to the crowbarhotel. He bailed me out and did not come un-glued about it. In retrospect hehad to be thinking this is very trivial, and thank God it was not for somethingreally bad. Looking back on Hull Street when I was in the 3rd grade I went toour local Baptist Church, and stayed close to The Lord in and out up and downit seemed my life was going. Got into many fights with the boys. They tried topush me around and I box there ears, and they learned a healthy respect for thiskid.

1974
Got a job at the Phosphate mines in Mulberry, FL. Calvin was a Supervisorthere and helped me get a Work Program Job while in High School. I movedout and got my own apartment. My new job paid $5.00 per hour. $5.00 in 1974was like making $25 today. Conserve Chemicals there where I worked was avast outside spread for miles. I worked at the Rock Shed Department. Iunloaded train cars full of special type of rock, and they made Acid from it.Next, they would process it into a different part of the plant and make fertilizer.While I was there that year a maintenance man fell to his death one wetmorning. He was not tied off, and his brother worked with him saw the wholething. We were all bummed out for over the rest of that year.

1975
Now in the 12th grade won't be long finally graduate and get out of this longawaited public school system. Met Irene; Vickie invited her over and she washooked line and sinker. I reeled her in and we got married. Later that year Igraduated and with-in six months I was in the Army.
19.
1976
Joined the Army and had a great year. During that year I signed up to be trainedon the Pistol Team at Fort Benning, GA. We were training to go into the ArmyPistol Team for the Olympics. I did not know this I was there just having fun.Meeting some cool people. When I found out we were going to Maryland tofurther our training. I told them no thank you I want to go back to Lakeland andget married. I gave up the Olympics for love. I am glad I did.

1977
I went back to Lakeland, and Irene and I were married in Bartow, FL. Calvinand Carolyn were there. And Irene's mother.
Me and Irene moved in our new single wide home there out side of the base.Later that year Stephanie was born. I also was hospitalized for a work relatedinjury. Right Inguinal Hernia. Our fork lift broke. We had to unload all thatheavy ammunition off the Semi trailer. Two weeks later something is wrong.Doctor found me to be with a Right Inguinal Hernia. Operation. Irene and Iwere in the hospital at the same time. It was wild. I went up to visit her in mywheel chair. Crazy, but fun. I was out in days. She was there 2 weeks.Complications. Stephanie was going be a preemie baby. Later that year camedown on orders to South Korea. Irene went back to Carolyn and Calvin andthey stayed there for the year I would be gone.

1978
Cold South Korea; and very lonely. My first book I ever read was in Korea.“The Power of Positive Thinking.” Norman Vincent Peal. I stayed busy, andmet some interesting Comrades there. Worked at the Rocket MaintenanceShop. While on the secure compound inside the gate; we worked on paintingmissiles. We had to go by the Army Regulations. We had the books open allthe time to follow along and do it professionally. I am not allowed to say whattype of munitions we worked with, but they were real and deadly. Heat seekingand High Explosive. We had to cut out the name of the munition and the serialnumbers. Then place the stencil over the area and paint very careful. You cannot have a mess. Got to be perfect. We trained constantly for our jobs and incase of invasion from North Korea. Fear of threats on our minds daily. Weplayed baseball to pass the time. We had parties on the week-ends. I gotpromoted to E-4 that year. Now I was issued a US Army 1/4 ton 4x4 Jeep.Model G503. I patrolled the outer perimeter and when I was done I took someprivate area look sees. The country sides where breath taking, and memorable.I started chewing Red Man, and it was something to pass the time. One daywhile at the Post Exchange; I met Sp/4 Weldon. He worked on top of that largetall mountain over there he was pointing at. His job was Telecommunications. Ioffered him a ride back to where he came from. We drove and drove; it took atleast 30 minutes to get to the top. We became fast friends. I got to place calls toIrene from that mountain top for free. Try making a collect call from SouthKorea to Tampa, FL $60 for 5 minutes. Later that year I fell 10' and laceratedmy head, and L4 compression fracture. Next, we had to train so much it burnedus all out. We trained on paper, and out in the field. Stress was really comingmy way. And sometimes we would drink to much have bad head aches. Imailed letters and sent packages home; it made me feel good. I started boxingand ran up and down the hills and lost 30 lbs. Did push up and got back intoshape. We finally were re-deployed to the States. When I got off the plane andIrene saw me she was flabbergasted I was cut and did not need band-aids.

1979
Our new duty station was Fort Sill, OK. Now Irene, Stephanie, and I had tobecome acquainted I been gone 365 days. First, I am there on the ground inLakeland, FL again, with family. I have 30 days vacation. We need a car; as wefind one and it needs new brakes. An old neighbor friend helps me put on thenew drum brakes. We are there four weeks and it's time to go to our new dutystation; Fort Sill, OK. We get there and there are small ice pellets blowingaround on the road. It was winter time, and Oklahoma was know for icestorms. I get to the reception area, and we get signed into our Hotel. Next, I goto the In processing Station on that Monday morn. Before I got to the buildingI slid off the road on the ice. Welcome to Oklahoma I am thinking. Thank Godthere was no other vehicles near. Made it through that day Processing into mynew duty station. Fort Sill Artillery Division. Found a small little cabin offbase. Irene made me my lunch bucket and I went to the Ammunition SupplyPoint to work. I worked at the Ammunition Depot. We issued the Artillery tothe troops to train with. 155mm rounds, and some were 8" rounds. Those 8"rounds were 200lbs each. Very heavy. During the winter we drove around theammo dump and killed time. Stayed warm in the truck. Picked up trash andkept the area clean. Then we would go to the dunage building were the soldierswould bring in the dunage all parts of the ammo packing that can be sent backto the factory and reused. I worked with a civilian named: Charlie. We becamefast friends. Later that year on April 10th around 5pm it started raining all of asudden and the sky turned yellow. The wind picked up violently. The Tornadosirens blared and we just did make it to the outside Tornado Cellar. It was overin 5 minutes. The town of Lawton was badly hit. It scared the crab out More…of us. Afew months went by and guess who came by from Florida to visit? Jim bo. Hecame all the way up to visit Irene, Stephanie and I . I just bought a Yamaha 650cc motorcycle. I took Jim out for a ride to see the wild Buffalo that wasmemorable. We got to see the Texas Long Horns, and the Prairie dogs. Jimtook some photos of Stephanie and we had a good week. We had Portraitstaken that year. We finally got to move into Quarters on post. Family Quarterswas much nicer.

1980
Got promoted to E-5. Came down on orders to go to Fort Chaffee, AR.Temporary duty at Fort Chaffee. Supported the National Guard for trainingammunition that summer. While out there that summer; I had to take myammunition training test. I went out to the EOD site and set up 3 separate 1 lbeach of C-4 blocks to detonate and destroy old artillery rounds. Measure thedetcord and placed the blasting caps in the C-4 and crimped the ends. Took theignitor and yelled in 3 directions;” Fire in The Hole; Fire in The Hole; Fire inThe Hole.” Pull the Ignitors and ran like crazy. I fell face first in the mud. I wasscared shitless. By the time I got to where the Ordnance people were they werelaughing their ass's off. And the charges started to blow. We got peppered withsmall pieces a debris. Later; that summer I got to ride around and found a smallgold mine. The government let hundreds of Cuban refugees into our country.So while our government was spending money I decided to help our soldiersout in the hot sun. I told the lady there we have all the people working in thehot sun. She gave me a brand new Igloo Cooler full of grade juice with ice.Watermelon, grapes, I loaded up. When I got back to the ammo dump theywere all so happy and I was finally loved. Later; that week I went to the samearea and found a carpentry shop. I asked him to make me a coffee pot shelf formy room. Later that week I asked the carpentry shop to make a stand for theIgloo Cooler. Things were going nicely. The next month was August. It got115? that summer. It was deadly hot. The roads were melting. Engineers had toput sand down on the roads. OK; there were hundreds of Cubans being heldbehind barb wire. One night I was running the movie projector in the moviehouse to make extra money. The Colonel came in turn that thing off. We gotriots out in the streets. The Cubans had set 3 WWII barracks on fire. It was likeday time at night. I got in my jeep and drove to the ammo dump to warn theguards there of what might be coming, but before I could get there I was metwith a barrage of Pissed off Cubans. They were throwing all kinds of stuff atme. I thought I was going to die that night. I made it to the ammo dump andsaved the day. I was awarded the “ Humanitarian Medal. “ for helping myfellow man. 1981
Later in 1981 the military handed over the ammo dump to the civilians. I had tofind another job. The Command Sergeant Major said find another job. I drovearound and found one Working at the Welding shop. For six months I workedat the welding shop. It was a school. One of our friends Alan Odom wasmurdered out in Lawton. It was very tragic and sad to us all. I then decided toget a job as the Re-enlistment NCO there in our Command. ArtilleryCommand. I learned how to order supplies there from the supply officer there.He should me how to find all the items in the manual. So I went and ordered allkinds of stuff for our office. The Sergeant I worked for was really amazed athow fast I was learning. He was very happy. He finally was shipped out and Iwas in charge. My higher ups were very impressed. I to finally came down onorders. I got commendations on the way out.

1982
I called ahead to Frankfurt, Germany and set up the pick-up at the air port.
I went to the Military Academy for E-6. That was very long and important. Ithelped me get promoted to Staff Sergeant. Next, I went to the E-6 board beforeI shipped out. Later that year I got orders and got ready to ship out to Germany.
When I got there Sergeant Jenkins was there to pick me up. We bypassed aweek of in processing. Now I went straight to my unit. We side stepped thesystem by a week. Good job. Irene and the girls went to Pete's home in WestVirginia. I went to the air port and fly to D.C. and waited for my over seasflight to Germany. While in the area of Arlington I decided to go and visit mymother's grave. It was very strange, but it felt right, and helped me processsome internal emotions. I saw JFK grave site 100 yards away from my mother'sgrave site. On the way out I saw many famous people's grave sites. That wasmemorable, and made me feel special that I could go there for the first timeand find all that I was looking for. I moved on and went to the military air portand got on my flight to Germany. Got there and got a jump start on the in-processing protocol. Little by little I learned my way around. I met my friendTony Williams. He would become my room mate until Irene got there. It tookabout 2 months to get her orders and get a flight to Germany. She finally gotthere and it was not long that the terrorist's started blowing things up. It wasvery scary, and we had to be very careful. We got settled in and started our newlives in Germany. Third Armored Division; Frankfurt, Germany.

1983
Got promoted to Staff Sergeant in 1983. We had Reforger that year. Gotcommendations for a good job issuing the Division's Ammunition while wetrained in this major training exercise. We met some nice people on duty andoff duty. Got our first car there that year and it gave us mobility there inFrankfurt. Irene got a nice job at 97th Army Hospital there in the X-Raydepartment. I learned more about Photography there and took some very nicephotos there that year. Christmas was very memorable . Learned about usinglens filters. Later that year at the Division Ammunition Office where I worked Iwas promoted to Basic Load job for the 3rd Armored Division Basic Load. Thisis the ammo used and stored for the real deal. This ammo was staged andstored in each companies secure location. If the shit hits the fan while we are inGermany this is the ammo each Battalion would use to fight the Russians theywere the threat for Germany. I had to learn how to use the new computers therein our office. Took me many months of hard study and practice to getproficient with this new equipment. Very tedious and arduous. My dad came tovisit that year. He was very glad to see us. He was retired Navy so he got themilitary free flights. It was cool that he went to all that trouble to come visit.Made me feel special.

1984
More bomb threats. More hard training. People coming and going. New peoplecoming and going. Learning how to get along with hard headed Negroes. Now Iam training others how to use the new computers. I learned a new way toprocess training ammo documents. Major Tommervick had me teach the officepersonnel how to use this new technique. God showed me this special way toprocess ammo documents faster.

1985
My dad came to Germany again. He called while I was out in the field. I justdid get home for a shower. I was there for a minute and he called from themilitary air port , and I went and got him. He was very proud of that day. I wasin full battle dress uniform. I picked him up in my military jeep. I had my 45pistol and all I looked like I was going to battle. He saw me and said are wegoing to war? I took him to our military housing there in Frankfurt. Later thatyear we went to visit some castles and other cool places. Nice swimmingplaces there in the surrounding areas. Our company went back to train at FortPicket, VA I got 3rd degree burns on my back. Very bad.

1986
Preparing to go back to the states. Orders to leave in May. We are going to FortHood, TX 2nd Armored Division. Since we were gone four years in Germany,we got to South Carolina to pick up our car we shipped back to the states. Idecided this little car ain't big enough to travel to all the places we wanted tovisit. West Virginia, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Florida and back to Texas. So Itraded our little Toyota for a small GMC Van. It was a good choice. I had over60 days of leave. We visited everyone. We went to Disney World, and hadJimmy go with us. Good memories. We went to Florida and had a blast, nextwe went to West Virginia, and saw Mike and Pete and Irene's dad. Next, wewent to Kentucky and saw Irene's brother Billy, and cousin Nancy and Norman.Then we went to Oklahoma and visited with Charlie and the people of ourchurch. Then we went to Texas and signed in and begun my tour of duty thereon Fort Hood, TX.

1987
While out in the field I got word from the Red Cross that my dad was dying. Igot a military hoop and went to Lakeland where my dad was. He was in theLakeland General Hospital. I stayed there 2 weeks and had a good visit withhim a night. I saw that he was holding on so I decided to go back to Texas andlet him pass on his own. And that's what happened. Got the call that he passed.Yeah; I was sad and me and Mike rode around and he stayed with me while Iwas grieving. Later that year we moved out of the mobile home and got a houseout in the community. Mike went back to West Virginia.

I was training in the field and was scheduled to relieve a fellow Staff Sergeant,but after a pre-inventory I found :

I screamed from the hill tops, and went straight back to my commandingofficer, and he wanted to sweep this under the rug. I ran straight to myCommand Sergeant Major and spilled the beans. I said I will not sign for thishorrible travesty. The Division Command Sergeant Major said I did the rightthing. The other black Staff Sergeant that I was suppose to relieve got put injail, and I was commended for doing the right thing. My commanding officewas relieve of duty and we got a new officer with in months. The thieves werefound down town. More black soldiers and they went to jail too. That year Ihad surgery on my left foot. Morton's Neuroma on the left foot. The pain wasvery bad. Could not walk without a cane now. Embarrassing to me. Had to goto National Training Center in Fort Irwin, CA. The command did not care that Icould not walk. They made me go anyway. I was going to be discharged soon.

1989
I had another surgery and it did not help. I made E-7 on paper, but I was beingprocessed out of the Army. I was being Medically Discharged. So while I wasbeing processed out I was paraded around and made to look like a fool. I couldnot wait to get out. I finally got out on March 25th 1989. Six months later,Desert Storm happened. Irene and I were selling Life Ins . To make extra cash.The town was empted out. Our clientele were gone. The soldiers all were sentover seas.

1990
Our money dried up and Irene had to get another job. I felt like shit cause I washurt and could not walk well and was in pain. This is when I went through thenext 10 years of confusion and anger.

1991
Moved back to Lakeland to find work. Billy West helped me get on a RoysterMines. I got on and was put with two black guys that did not work. I wasworking while the black guy went to sleep; yeah; very pathetic. He finally gotfired. Then the other black guy got caught smoking weed on the job. The otherguys there were just as bad. They did not clean out the rail car of it's wet rockand I got fired because they did not do their job. It was a nightmare. The devilwas out to kill me. One day while I was working a 12 hour shift I had to go ontop of the building and clean the wet DAP product off the roof and put it in awheel barrel and drop it off the top of the roof over the edge. That DAPproduct was stuck to the bottom of the wheel barrel; I shock it while standingon the edge of the building it tried to pull me over I let go. I scare the shit outof me. The wheel barrel was new and my asshole supervisor there was buildinghis case against me to fire me. And with in 2 months that's what happened. AllI wanted was to provide for my family.

1992
Me and Craig went to Texas to get Irene and the girls. We moved our stuffdown to Lakeland. We brought Stormin Norman our dog. It was a roller coasterfor years. Had many visits with the VA Hospital there in Tampa. Went tocollege for Computer Science pain could not concentrate because of pain.Later that year I bought a Polishing business and was doing well until I was re-ended by a middle size truck. That loosened up my old back injury from SouthKorea. I felt like Job; what ever I tried to do the devil slapped me down. Ibecame mentally unstable. I was livid and pissed at the world.
36.
1993
Irene and I were not happy anymore. I was being medicated by the VA. I feltdead inside. I did not want to live. I felt my life was over. The Chiropractorssaid I could not do business as the Auto Detailer. Had to sell my business. Ok; Igave it one more try. Junior West helped me get a job a the Lakeland Bakerythere. I worked in the Sanitation Department. Remember I have bad feet. Isuffered day in and day out walking on the hard floor. I was very thankful forthe job. I lasted 1 year.

1994
The straw that broke the camels back. I could no longer study. Had to drop outof the VA program. Got fired from the Bakery cause I re-injured my low back.I could not finish my job that night. Filed workman's comp, and went to themeeting with the state rep and she said I came more prepared than thesupervisor who fired me. I got the workman's comp, and Irene and the girlsmoved to West Virginia. The supervisor that fired me ; got fired himself. Thebakery found out about Marty and he made the bakery look bad. So they gotride of him. I finally got my Social Security claim. In October of 1994 I movedup to West Virginia to work things out with Irene. I got them out of Pete'shome into a nice home. We bought some nice furniture. I was there 2 monthsand went to the VA and they saw how distraught I was and they kept me for 2years.

1995
While in Mainstream program Marshall tried to kill his roommate. Lord toldme to stop him and that's what I did. I ran down the hall way and yelled stopMarshall, and by then I was right on top of him I pulled him by the back of hisshirt, and we were on the floor in 2 seconds. The Lord and I had him pinned intwo seconds. The Hospital Police took Marshall to the Psych ward. Later theHospital Police Chief gave me a thank you letter for helping them.

Hey Terry; yeah all is well. Time is flying--right? I have some news; my grandson Bradley got married last year, and he and his wife are now expecting this month. Wow; I will be a Grate Grandpa. Yikes; oh my time really is moving on down the line. So much has changed in our country; I pray God will sort this all out and wake up those that need to being about His work-Amen. Yeah; I am here if you want to talk. You know my birthday is October 17th the same day of the 50th Reunion. Oh my time has really been flying. I will talk later. Got something in the oven to get out. 50 years has gone by-that's crazy. Wow; 50 years; yikes. I will be there in Lakeland on my birthday: October 17th 2025 for the 50 year Re-Union. Take care, and see you there --yes?

Hello Penny; hope all is well. Wow; time is really flying it seems. How is it up there in SC?
I love those peaches up there I think they are better than the ones in Georgia. Yeah; I am retired Army. Had a very good time. They let me go to school when I wanted. I have a lot of information to share with whom ever asks. Live out here in Fort White, FL inbetween Lake City & Gainvesville. I have 8.6 ac out in the country. I am fixing up the home to sell. Happy Birthday Grace. Hope all is well. How is Jen and her family? Is Tom still kicking? Hope all is well .

Well, Well, Well, hope all is well. Yeah; they keep putting more candles on my cake too. I was born October 17th 1956 in San Antonio, TX my dad and mom were in the Navy. We moved to St. Pete in 1961. Then to Lakeland in 1964. Yeah; my birthday being in October I had to wait one more year. I should of graduated in 74. Happy Birtday. I talked to Tom Gay and Mary and they said it is terrible with the influx of population down there. I live up here in Fort White area in between Gainnesville and Lake City on the west side of I-75. Merry Christmas. Oh; I don't if I told you this, but Mike Alexander has gone to heaven 10 years ago. Hope you have a great birthday. God Bless you and your family. Talk to you later. Wow; time is flying by it seems. We look back and Wow ; a lot has happened over the years.
I hope life has been kind. I am retired from the Army and staying busy up here in the Fort White area. Lot's of trees and wildlife up here. Lot's of crystal clear springs too. Take care and God Bless.
